Explicación (en español)

En este nivel C1, utilizamos estructuras hipotéticas para expresar deseos, arrepentimientos o para criticar comportamientos ajenos. Estas estructuras no se refieren a la realidad, sino a situaciones imaginarias o deseos de que la realidad fuera distinta. Un punto clave es que, aunque en español solemos usar el presente o el imperfecto de forma más flexible, en inglés el cambio de tiempo verbal es obligatorio para marcar la distancia entre la realidad y la hipótesis.

Para expresar un deseo sobre el presente, utilizamos wish o if only seguidos del Past Simple. Por ejemplo, si quieres decir "Ojalá tuviera más diversidad en mi equipo", usamos el pasado para indicar que es una situación hipotética. Un error común es intentar usar el presente (I wish I have...), lo cual es incorrecto. Sin embargo, si el deseo es sobre algo que ocurrió en el pasado (un arrepentimiento), debemos usar el Past Perfect (I wish I had implemented...).

Cuando queremos expresar que alguien debería cambiar su comportamiento (una queja o crítica), utilizamos wish/if only + would. Esto es crucial en contextos de DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion), donde podemos expresar frustración ante actitudes no inclusivas. Es importante notar que no solemos usar would para hablar de nosotros mismos (I wish I would... es incorrecto; se usa I wish I could), sino para referirnos a terceras personas.

Finalmente, las estructuras it's time y would rather tienen reglas específicas. Con it's time, usamos el Past Simple para indicar que algo debería haber ocurrido ya o que es urgente (It's time we addressed bias). Con would rather, si el sujeto cambia (queremos que otra persona haga algo), usamos el Past Simple (I'd rather you didn't interrupt). Este es un error frecuente: los hispanohablantes tienden a usar el presente cuando el inglés exige el pasado para marcar la hipótesis.
