Integrated skills task

Reading Text

The concept of statelessness remains one of the most profound challenges in modern international law. A stateless person is someone who is not considered a national by any state under the operation of its law. This lack of legal identity often results in a complete absence of fundamental rights, including access to education, healthcare, and freedom of movement. While the 1954 Convention relating to the Status of Stateless Persons aims to protect these individuals, enforcement remains inconsistent across borders.

Furthermore, the distinction between a refugee and an economic migrant often becomes blurred in political discourse. While refugees flee due to a well-founded fear of persecution, economic migrants move in search of better living standards. However, in many conflict zones, these motivations overlap, complicating the legal processes of asylum. As global displacement reaches unprecedented levels, the international community faces the daunting task of reconciling national sovereignty with universal human rights.

Task Instructions

Speaking checkpoint

  1. Compare: Compare the legal status of a refugee with that of a stateless person.
  2. Speculate: How might the global refugee crisis change in the next fifty years due to climate change?
  3. Evaluate: Evaluate the effectiveness of international treaties in protecting human rights in conflict zones.
  4. Justify: Do you believe that national sovereignty should ever take precedence over international humanitarian law? Justify your answer.
  5. Hypothesize: If a person has no legal identity, how would their daily life differ from yours?
  6. Discuss: Discuss the ethical implications of strict border controls in the context of human rights.
