Lesson objectives

  • Recognise and control Indirect questions and embedded clauses (I wonder whether…).
  • Notice common errors Spanish-speaking learners make at advanced level.
  • Apply the structure in exam-style sentences related to refugee law, statelessness & human rights.

Por ejemplo, no decimos "I wonder where is the refugee camp", sino "I wonder where the refugee camp is".

No decimos "I don't know why did he leave", sino "I don't know why he left".

Contrast

  1. ✗ I wonder why is he seeking asylum. / ✓ I wonder why he is seeking asylum.

  2. ✗ Could you tell me if does he have a valid passport? / ✓ Could you tell me if he has a valid passport? (Error: Uso innecesario del auxiliar 'does'.

  3. ✗ They asked where was the detention centre. / ✓ They asked where the detention centre was. (Error: Inversión del verbo 'to be'.

  4. ✗ I don't know whether will they be granted protection. / ✓ I don't know whether they will be granted protection. (Error: El orden sujeto + verbo debe mantenerse tras 'whether').
