Active listening strategies (C1)

1. Pre-listening priming: Antes de dar al play, lee el título y busca el contexto histórico o legal del tema. Esto prepara tu cerebro para los términos técnicos que podrías encontrar.
2. Selective listening: No intentes entender cada palabra. Practica el "gist listening" (entender la idea general) en la primera escucha y luego enfócate en detalles específicos en la segunda.
3. Note-taking by structure: En lugar de escribir frases completas, utiliza esquemas (bullet points) que sigan la estructura del argumento: Problem $\rightarrow$ Argument $\rightarrow$ Counter-argument $\rightarrow$ Conclusion.
4. Shadowing for prosody: Si escuchas una frase con una entonación o ritmo interesante, pausa el audio e intenta repetirla exactamente igual. Esto mejora tu fluidez y capacidad de reconocer el énfasis en el discurso.
5. Vocabulary mapping: Cuando escuches un término nuevo, no solo anotes la traducción. Anota la palabra y la palabra que la acompaña (collocations), por ejemplo: to grant + asylum.
6. Identifying signposting: Presta especial atención a los conectores (however, nonetheless, conversely, furthermore). Estos son las "señales de tráfico" que te indican hacia dónde se dirige el argumento del hablante.

Follow-up task

Task: The Analytical Summary

1. Vocabulary Extraction: After listening, select 8 new words or collocations. Write a definition for each in English and use each one in a new, original sentence related to the topic of human rights.
2. Critical Note-taking: Write a 150-word summary of the podcast. You must include:
   • The main argument presented.
   • One counter-argument mentioned by the speaker.
   • The speaker's tone (e.g., objective, critical, empathetic).
3. Oral Synthesis (Speaking Practice): Record a 2-minute voice note on your phone summarizing your opinion on the topic. You must use at least 4 of the new vocabulary words you learned. Listen to your own recording and check if your pronunciation and intonation match the speakers in the podcast.
