Active listening strategies (C1)

1. Predictive Listening: Antes de dar al play, lee el título y la descripción. Intenta predecir qué vocabulario o argumentos podrían surgir para preparar tu cerebro para el contexto.
2. Selective Attention: No intentes entender cada palabra. Decide si vas a escuchar para captar la idea general (gist) o para extraer detalles específicos (scanning).
3. Shadowing: Si escuchas una frase con una estructura gramatical compleja o una entonación interesante, pausa el audio e intenta repetirla imitando exactamente el ritmo y la acentuación del hablante.
4. Note-taking by Argument: En lugar de escribir palabras sueltas, escribe los puntos de vista. Por ejemplo: "Speaker A: Pro-privatization / Speaker B: Focus on equity". Esto entrena tu capacidad de síntesis. so
5. Identify Discourse Markers: Presta especial atención a las palabras que conectan ideas (however, nonetheless, conversely, furthermore). Estas son las señales que te indican hacia dónde se dirige el argumento.
6. Contextual Guessing: Cuando encuentres una palabra desconocida, no pares el audio inmediatamente. Intenta deducir su significado por el contexto y la carga emocional de la frase; solo busca la palabra al terminar el segmento.

Task: The Critical Synthesis

1. Vocabulary Extraction: While listening, write down at least 8 new words or collocations. After the episode, look up their definitions and write one original sentence for each that relates to your own country's healthcare system.
2. Argument Mapping: Create a T-chart in your notebook. On the left, list the "Challenges" mentioned in the podcast; on the right, list the "Proposed Solutions."
3. Oral Summary (The 2-Minute Challenge): Record yourself on your phone giving a 2-minute summary of the podcast. You must use at least 3 of the "key phrases" you learned during the episode. Listen to your recording and note one thing you could improve (e.g., pronunciation, speed, or use of fillers).
