Explicación (en español)
En este nivel C1, utilizamos estructuras hipotéticas para expresar deseos, arrepentimientos o para criticar situaciones actuales. Estas estructuras no se refieren a la realidad, sino a escenarios imaginarios o cambios que nos gustaría que ocurrieran. Es fundamental entender que el tiempo verbal que sigue a estas expresiones suele "retroceder" un paso en el tiempo (backshifting). Por ejemplo, si hablamos de un deseo presente, usamos el Past Simple.
La estructura "Wish" y "If only" se utilizan para expresar que algo no es como nos gustaría. "If only" es ligeramente más fuerte y enfático que "wish". Cuando nos referimos a un arrepentimiento sobre el pasado, utilizamos el Past Perfect. Un error común entre hispanohablantes es intentar usar el presente cuando queremos expresar un deseo actual; recuerda que para "desear que algo fuera distinto ahora", debemos usar el pasado.
"Would rather" se utiliza para expresar preferencia. Si el sujeto de la oración es el mismo, usamos el infinitivo sin "to" (I'd rather stay). Sin embargo, si queremos que otra persona haga algo, cambiamos el sujeto y usamos el Past Simple (I'd rather you stayed). Este es un punto crítico para el examen C1, ya que implica un cambio de sujeto que confunde a muchos estudiantes.
Finalmente, "It's time" se utiliza para decir que algo debería haber ocurrido ya o que es el momento de actuar. Al igual que con "would rather", si usamos la estructura "It's time + subject", debemos usar el Past Simple (It's time the government acted). No confundas esto con el tiempo real; aunque usemos el pasado, nos referimos a una necesidad en el presente.
