Lesson objectives

  • Recognise and control Conditionals (mixed 2nd/3rd, inverted conditionals).
  • Notice common errors Spanish-speaking learners make at advanced level.
  • Apply the structure in exam-style sentences related to society, law & justice.

El primero combina el 3rd Conditional (pasado) con el 2nd Conditional (presente/permanente): If I had studied law (pasado), I would be a lawyer now (presente). El segundo combina el 2nd Conditional (situación general) con el 3rd Conditional (pasado): If I weren't so indecisive (rasgo de personalidad), I would have taken the job (pasado).

En lugar de decir "If you should need assistance...", decimos "Should you need assistance...".

Form — estructura

Conditional Type If-clause (Condition) Main clause (Result) Usage
Mixed (Type A) Past Perfect (If I had done) Would + Infinitive (I would be) Past condition $\rightarrow$ Present result
Mixed (Type B) Past Simple (If I were) Would have + Past Participle (I would have done) Present/General condition $\rightarrow$ Past result
Inverted (2nd) Were + Subject (Were I you) Would + Infinitive Formal version of 2nd Conditional
Inverted (3rd) Had + Subject + Past Participle Would have + Past Participle Formal version of 3rd Conditional

Examples

  1. If the government had passed the law sooner, the crime rate would be lower today.
  2. If I weren't so idealistic, I would have accepted the corrupt deal. (Si no fuera tan idealista, habría aceptado el trato corrupto).
  3. Had the jury reached a verdict earlier, the defendant would not be in jail.
  4. Were the police to increase patrols, crime would decrease significantly.
  5. If they hadn't ignored the social protests, the country wouldn't be in chaos now.
  6. Had we known about the loophole in the contract, we would have acted differently.
  7. If she were a more honest person, she wouldn't have lied to the judge.
  8. Should the court decide to appeal, the legal proceedings will continue.

Contrast

  1. ✗ If I would have known the law, I wouldn't have broken it. ✓ Had I known the law, I wouldn't have broken it. (Error: No se usa "would" en la cláusula con "if/had". La inversión requiere el auxiliar al principio).

  2. ✗ If I had been more careful, I wouldn't be in trouble now. (This is actually correct, but let's look at a common mistake) ✗ If I was more careful, I wouldn't have been in trouble. (Incorrect usage of 'was' in formal inversion) ✓ Were I more careful, I wouldn't have been in trouble.

  3. ✗ If the judge hadn't been biased, the outcome would be different. (Correct, but let's contrast with a mistake) ✗ If the judge wouldn't have been biased, the outcome would be different. ✓ If the judge hadn't been biased, the outcome would be different. (Error: El "if-clause" del tercer condicional requiere Past Perfect, no "would").

  4. ✗ If I am you, I would have signed the treaty. ✓ Were I you, I would have signed the treaty. (Error: Para situaciones hipotéticas de "ser alguien", usamos "were" o la inversión "were I").
