Unit 69: Sports Medicine, Training & Performance

Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2)

Task Type: Report

Context: You are a member of a professional sports club. The club's management has requested a report regarding the recent implementation of a new high-performance training programme and the integration of sports medicine specialists into the daily routine.

Task: Write a report for the Club Manager. In your report, you should: * Evaluate the effectiveness of the new training protocols on athlete performance. * Discuss the impact of the new medical staff on injury prevention. * Recommend whether the current programme should be continued or modified for the next season.

Evita contracciones (use do not instead of don't) y evita el uso excesivo de la primera persona (I); prefiere estructuras impersonales (It was observed that...).
  • Linking: Utiliza conectores de transición para organizar las ideas (e.g., Furthermore, In contrast, Consequently). No te limites a "and" o "but".
  • Hedging (Lenguaje cauteloso): En el nivel C1, no afirmes cosas de forma absoluta si no es necesario. Usa verbos como suggest, appear to, seem to para mostrar matices profesionales (The data suggests that...).

Report on High-Performance Training and Medical Integration

Introduction The purpose of this report is to evaluate the recent implementation of the high-performance training programme and the integration of the sports medicine team. This assessment aims to determine the effectiveness of these changes regarding athlete performance and injury prevention.

Training Effectiveness Regarding the new training protocols, there has been a noticeable improvement in the physical conditioning of the athletes. The data suggests that the increased intensity, combined with more scientific periodisation, has led to superior stamina during matches. However, it was observed that some athletes experienced significant fatigue during the initial weeks. Despite this, the overall performance levels have surpassed previous seasonal benchmarks.

Medical Integration and Injury Prevention The inclusion of specialist medical staff has had a profound impact on injury management. By implementing proactive recovery sessions, the club has seen a marked decrease in soft-tissue injuries. Furthermore, the constant monitoring of physiological markers allows for early intervention, which has significantly reduced downtime for key players. While the cost of these services is substantial, the benefits to player availability are undeniable.

Recommendations In light of these findings, it is recommended that the current programme be continued. Nevertheless, to mitigate the fatigue issues mentioned previously, the training load should be slightly adjusted to allow for better recovery windows. If these modifications are implemented, the club will be well-positioned for the upcoming season.

Marking checklist

  • Content: Does the report address all three bullet points from the task? Is the information relevant to the reader (the Manager)?
  • Communicative Achievement: Is the tone consistently formal and professional? Does it follow the conventions of a report (e.g., using headings)?
  • Organisation: Are the ideas logically sequenced? Are cohesive devices (linkers) used effectively to connect paragraphs and sentences?
  • Language: Is there a wide range of vocabulary (e.g., periodisation, benchmarks, mitigation)? Is the grammar complex and accurate (e.g., passive voice, advanced structures)?
