Unit 45: Ocean Health & Marine Conservation
Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2)
Question: You work for a leading environmental NGO. Your director has asked you to write a report regarding the current state of local marine ecosystems and the effectiveness of recent conservation efforts.
In your report, you should: * Assess the main threats to local marine biodiversity. * Evaluate the impact of recent conservation initiatives. * Suggest future actions to ensure long-term ocean health.
Write your report. You must use between 220-260 words.
Tips (en español)
- Structure: Al escribir un report, utiliza subtítulos (headings) claros para cada sección. Esto ayuda al lector a navegar por la información y es una característica esencial del género.
- Register: Mantén un tono formal y objetivo. Evita contracciones (use do not instead of don't) y evita el uso excesivo de la primera persona (I), prefiriendo estructuras impersonales.
- Linking: Utiliza conectores de transición avanzados para guiar al lector entre ideas (e.g., Furthermore, In light of the above, Regarding). No te limites a and o but.
- Hedging (Cautious language): En el nivel C1, no afirmes cosas de forma absoluta. Usa lenguaje cauteloso para sonar más académico (e.g., It appears that..., This could lead to..., It is widely believed that...).

Report on Marine Ecosystem Health and Conservation Efforts
Introduction The purpose of this report is to assess the current state of our local marine ecosystems and evaluate the effectiveness of recent conservation strategies. It aims to provide recommendations for future environmental protection.
Current Threats to Biodiversity The primary threat to local marine life is the increasing level of plastic pollution and chemical runoff from coastal industries. These contaminants have led to a noticeable decline in coral health and fish populations. Furthermore, rising sea temperatures are causing significant habitat disruption, which threatens to destabilise the entire food chain.
Evaluation of Recent Initiatives Recent efforts, such as the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), have yielded mixed results. While these zones have successfully prevented overfishing in specific sectors, they have not fully mitigated the impact of rising temperatures. It should be noted, however, that biodiversity levels within these zones are marginally higher than in unprotected waters, suggesting that the initiatives are a step in the right direction.
Recommendations for Future Action To ensure long-term ocean health, it is imperative to move beyond local protection and implement stricter regulations on industrial waste. Additionally, investment in community-led restoration projects, such as seagrass replanting, should be prioritised.
Conclusion In conclusion, while current conservation efforts have provided some relief, they are insufficient to combat the scale of the crisis. A more comprehensive approach, combining legislative strength with active habitat restoration, is required to safeguard our marine heritage.
