Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2 style)

Question: Your lecturer has asked you to write an essay discussing the impact of rising nationalism on modern democratic institutions. You should discuss two of the following points: 1. The influence of populist rhetoric on political discourse. 2. The potential erosion of democratic checks and balances.

Write your essay (220-260 words). You should explain which of the two points you consider to be more significant and give reasons for your opinion.

  • Linking: No te limites a usar firstly o secondly.
  • Hedging (Cautela): En temas políticos, evita generalizaciones absolutas como "Nationalism is bad". Usa el hedging (it could be argued that..., tends to..., may lead to...) para mostrar sofisticación académica.

The Impact of Nationalism on Modern Democracy

In recent years, the global political landscape has been significantly reshaped by the resurgence of nationalist movements. This essay will examine how populist rhetoric and the erosion of democratic checks and balances contribute to this shift, ultimately determining the stability of modern governance.

One significant concern is the influence of populist rhetoric on political discourse. Often, leaders employ "us versus them" narratives to galvanise their supporters, frequently targeting minority groups or international institutions. While such rhetoric can create a strong sense of national identity, it tends to polarise society, making constructive political dialogue increasingly difficult. This division often undermines the very foundations of pluralistic debate.

Furthermore, the erosion of democratic checks and balances represents a more profound threat. As nationalist leaders consolidate power, they may attempt to weaken judicial independence or limit the freedom of the press to prevent opposition. If these institutional safeguards are dismantled, the transition from a democracy to an autocracy becomes a tangible risk. This systemic decay is arguably more dangerous than mere rhetoric, as it alters the legal framework of a nation.

In conclusion, while populist rhetoric serves to polarise the electorate, it is the erosion of institutional checks and balances that poses the more significant threat. While rhetoric shapes opinion, the weakening of institutions fundamentally dismantles the democratic process itself. Therefore, protecting the independence of the judiciary and the press must remain a priority to ensure democratic survival.
