Integrated skills task
Reading Source Text
The erosion of democratic norms is rarely a sudden event; rather, it is a gradual process often facilitated by charismatic leaders who claim to represent the "true will of the people" against a "corrupt elite." This brand of populism often relies on an "us versus them" narrative, which can lead to extreme social polarization. While nationalism can provide a sense of unity, when it shifts from civic pride to exclusionary identity politics, it threatens the pluralistic nature of modern democracies. As institutions are weakened to consolidate executive power, the checks and balances essential to a healthy democracy begin to fail. This creates a cycle where political discourse becomes increasingly radicalized, making compromise nearly impossible and leaving the door open for authoritarianism.
