Unit 37: Youth Culture & Generational Conflict
Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2)
Question: Your lecturer has asked you to write a report on the impact of changing social values on the relationship between different generations in your country.
In your report, you should: * Analyse the main causes of tension between young people and older generations. * Evaluate how technology has influenced this generational gap. * Suggest ways in which both groups could better understand one another.
Write your report.
- Linking: Utiliza conectores de nivel avanzado para guiar al lector (e.g., Furthermore, Nevertheless, In light of the above). No te limites a and o but.
- Hedging (Lenguaje cauteloso): En el C1, no afirmes cosas de forma absoluta. Usa "hedging" para sonar más académico (e.g., It could be argued that... o This tends to lead to... en lugar de This leads to...).
- Evaluación de ideas: No te limites a listar problemas. Debes analizar la causa y la consecuencia. Cada punto debe estar desarrollado con profundidad.
- Time management: Dedica unos 45 minutos a esta tarea. Dedica 5 minutos a planificar los subtítulos y los puntos clave antes de empezar a escribir para evitar perder el hilo.

Report on Generational Dynamics and Social Shifts
Introduction The purpose of this report is to examine the growing friction between younger and older generations, specifically regarding social values and technological integration. It also aims to propose potential solutions to bridge this divide.
Causes of Generational Tension A primary source of conflict stems from diverging political and social outlooks. While older generations often value tradition and stability, younger individuals tend to prioritise social justice and rapid systemic change. This fundamental difference in priorities can lead to mutual misunderstanding, where traditional values are perceived as regressive, and modern movements are viewed as disruptive.
The Role of Technology The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly widened the generational gap. Younger generations are "digital natives," having grown up with instant connectivity, which has shaped their communication styles and worldview. Conversely, older generations may struggle to adapt to these digital norms, leading to a sense of alienation. This technological divide often results in a breakdown in communication, as the medium and pace of interaction differ vastly between age groups.
Recommendations for Improved Understanding To mitigate these tensions, it is suggested that community-based mentorship programmes be established. Such initiatives would allow for a reciprocal exchange of knowledge: older individuals could offer life experience and historical context, while younger people could provide digital literacy. Furthermore, fostering environments for intergenerational dialogue would encourage empathy and reduce prejudice.
Conclusion In conclusion, while technological and social shifts have created significant friction, these gaps are not insurmountable. Through structured dialogue and mutual respect, the strengths of both generations can be harnessed.
