Lesson objectives

  • Describe, compare and speculate more naturally under speaking-task pressure.
  • Use useful phrases with better rhythm, stress and connected speech.
  • Respond to image prompts connected to renewable energy & smart grids with C1-level range.
Lesson audio

Listen to the model audio before you answer the lesson tasks.

Speaking — describe & compare

At first glance, these two images present a striking dichotomy between traditional industrialism and modern sustainable technology. The left-hand side depicts a conventional coal-fired power plant, characterised by heavy smoke and a somewhat gloomy, industrial atmosphere. This represents the fossil fuel era, which has historically driven global development but at a significant environmental cost. In stark contrast, the right-hand side showcases a clean, bright landscape featuring wind turbines and solar-integrated housing. This depicts a smart grid ecosystem, where renewable energy is seamlessly woven into daily life.

While the former focuses on centralised, high-emission energy production, the latter highlights a more decentralised and eco-friendly approach. One could argue that the first image represents a bygone era of environmental neglect, whereas the second suggests a hopeful transition towards sustainability. It is highly likely that if we do not move towards the model shown on the right, the atmospheric conditions seen on the left will become our permanent reality. Ultimately, both images touch upon the theme of energy transition, forcing us to consider whether we can successfully pivot from such heavy industrial reliance to these cleaner, smarter alternatives.
