Explicación (en español)

En el nivel C1 Advanced, ya no basta con usar "say" o "tell" para reportar lo que alguien ha dicho. Para alcanzar la puntuación necesaria en el examen de Cambridge, debemos utilizar reporting verbs más precisos que aporten matices de intención, actitud o legalidad. En contextos de derecho ambiental y litigios climáticos, verbos como allege, deny, insist y urge son esenciales para describir acusaciones, defensas o peticiones formales.

La estructura gramatical cambia significativamente según el verbo que elijamos. Algunos verbos requieren un objeto directo seguido de un infinitivo (insist on doing / urge someone to do), otros requieren una cláusula con "that" (allege that...), y otros pueden ir seguidos de un gerundio. El error más común entre los hispanohablantes es intentar traducir directamente la estructura del español. Por ejemplo, en español decimos "insistió en que...", pero en inglés, si usamos "insist", la estructura suele ser insisted that [clause] o insisted on [verb-ing].

Otro punto crítico es el uso de allege. En contextos legales, to allege significa afirmar algo que aún no ha sido probado. A diferencia de "say", que es neutro, allege implica una acusación. Por el contrario, deny se usa para negar una acusación y suele ir seguido de un gerundio (deny having done something) o de una cláusula con that.

Finalmente, debemos prestar atención al "backshift" (el cambio de tiempos verbales). Al igual que con el estilo indirecto estándar, cuando el verbo principal está en pasado (The lawyer insisted...), el tiempo verbal de la frase reportada también debe retroceder (...that the company would pay). No obstante, si la situación sigue siendo relevante, a veces el cambio es más flexible, pero para el examen de Cambridge, la consistencia con el pasado es la norma de oro.
