Unit 68: Palliative Care, Death & Dying Conversations
Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2)
Type: Formal Letter
Context: You have seen a news report discussing the emotional and logistical challenges faced by families when dealing with end-of-life care. You are writing to the editor of a national newspaper to express your views on how society should approach these sensitive conversations.
Write a letter to the editor. You must address the following points: * The importance of preparing families for palliative care. * How society can reduce the stigma surrounding discussions about death. * The role of professional support in managing these transitions.
Write your letter in 220–260 words in an appropriate style.
Evita contracciones (use do not instead of don't) y lenguaje coloquial. Dado el tema, el tono debe ser serio y empático.
- Linking: Utiliza conectores de nivel C1 para guiar al lector (e.g., Furthermore, Notwithstanding, In light of the above). Esto demuestra control sobre la cohesión.
- Hedging (Cautela): En temas sensibles, no uses afirmaciones absolutas. Usa el "hedging" para sonar más académico y diplomático (e.g., It could be argued that... o It appears to be...).

Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my views regarding the recent report concerning the complexities of palliative care and the profound challenges families face when navigating end-of-life transitions.
It is often asserted that death is a taboo subject, yet it is precisely this silence that complicates the dying process. While it is understandable that such topics evoke discomfort, the lack of open dialogue often leads to unnecessary emotional distress. It is imperative that we foster an environment where discussing mortality is seen not as morbid, but as an act of compassion and preparation. By addressing these matters proactively, families can ensure that the wishes of the patient are respected, thereby mitigating potential conflicts.
Furthermore, reducing the social stigma surrounding death requires a shift in perspective. We must move away from viewing death solely as a clinical failure and instead recognise it as a natural, albeit difficult, stage of life. This shift would allow for more meaningful conversations regarding advanced care planning.
Finally, the role of professional support cannot be overstated. Specialist palliative teams provide not only medical expertise but also the psychological scaffolding necessary for families to cope with loss. Such support is vital in bridging the gap between clinical necessity and emotional well-being.
In light of these considerations, I believe that society must prioritise education and emotional readiness. Only through open communication and professional guidance can we approach the end of life with the dignity it deserves.
Yours faithfully,
[Your Name]
