Explicación (en español)

En inglés, cuando queremos utilizar un verbo como si fuera un sustantivo (para hablar de una actividad en general), utilizamos la forma -ing (el gerundio). En este contexto, no estamos hablando de una acción que está ocuralgo en este momento, sino del concepto de la acción. Por ejemplo, en la frase "Playing video games is fun", el sujeto no es "yo jugando", sino el concepto de "jugar videojuegos".

Es muy común usar las cláusulas con -ing como el sujeto de la oración. En español, solemos usar el infinitivo (Jugar es divertido), pero en inglés, si el verbo actúa como el núcleo del sujeto, la forma -ing es la opción natural y gramaticalmente correcta. Otro uso común es como objeto de verbos que expresan gustos, preferencias o sentimientos (como love, hate, enjoy, dislike).

Un error típico de los hispanohablantes es intentar usar el infinitivo (To play video games is fun) como sujeto. Aunque no es estrictamente incorrecto en contextos muy literarios o formales, suena poco natural en el inglés cotidiano y en los exámenes de nivel C1. Otro error frecuente es olvidar que, cuando el -ing funciona como sujeto, el verbo principal debe ir en tercera persona del singular (Playing... is, no Playing... **are).

Finalmente, recuerda que cuando usamos -ing como objeto, la estructura suele ser: Sujeto + Verbo + [Verbo-ing]. Por ejemplo: "I enjoy playing" (Disfruto jugar). En español, la traducción suele ser el infinitivo, pero en inglés, tras verbos de preferencia, el gerundio es la norma.

Contrast

  1. ✗ To play games every day is unhealthy. / ✓ Playing games every day is unhealthy. (En inglés, el gerundio es el sujeto estándar; el infinitivo suena forzado).

  2. ✗ I love to playing RPGs. / ✓ I love playing RPGs. (No se deben mezclar el infinitivo y el gerundio en la misma estructura de objeto).

  3. ✗ To lose a match is frustrating. / ✓ Losing a match is frustrating. (Nuevamente, para sujetos, el gerundio es la forma natural).

  4. ✗ He finished to write the script. / ✓ He finished writing the script. (Ciertos verbos, como 'finish', requieren obligatoriamente la forma -ing después).
