Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2)

Question: Your lecturer has asked you to write a review for the university magazine about the changing landscape of reading in the digital age. You should discuss whether e-books and digital platforms are replacing traditional printed books and whether this shift is a positive or negative development for readers.

Write your review. You must use between 220-260 words.

  • Hedging (Lenguaje cauteloso): En lugar de decir "Digital books are better", usa "Digital books might offer more convenience".
Debes evaluar.

The Digital Shift: A New Chapter for Readers?

For centuries, the tactile sensation of turning a paper page has been synonymous with reading. However, the meteoric rise of e-books and digital platforms has sparked a heated debate: is the era of the printed book drawing to a close?

There is no denying the undeniable convenience offered by digital devices. The ability to carry an entire library in one’s pocket is a game-changer for commuters and travellers alike. Furthermore, the accessibility features of e-readers, such as adjustable font sizes, make reading more inclusive than ever before. It is highly likely that for many, the sheer practicality of digital reading will continue to outweigh traditional methods.

Nevertheless, many bibliophiles argue that something essential is lost in translation. The physical connection to a book—the smell of the paper and the visual satisfaction of a growing bookshelf—cannot be replicated by a cold, glass screen. While digital books are efficient, they often lack the "soul" that makes reading a sensory experience. Additionally, the potential for digital distractions can often undermine the deep immersion that a physical book provides.

All things considered, I do not believe that digital platforms will entirely replace printed books. Instead, we are witnessing a coexistence of two different reading cultures. While e-books are perfect for convenience and travel, the printed word remains a sanctuary for those seeking a distraction-free experience. Ultimately, whether digital or paper, the most important thing is that the joy of reading survives.

Marking checklist
