Unit 54: Architecture, Design & Public Space
Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2)
Question: Your local city council is considering a proposal to replace a historic, traditional market square with a modern, multi-purpose glass and steel complex. Some residents believe this will revitalise the city, while others argue it will destroy the local identity.
Write a REPORT for the City Council, evaluating the potential impact of this new design on the community and recommending whether the project should proceed.
Evita contracciones (use do not instead of don't) y lenguaje coloquial.
Usa lenguaje cauteloso (it could be argued that, it is likely that) para mostrar sofisticación.

Report on the Proposed Urban Redevelopment Project
Introduction The purpose of this report is to evaluate the proposal to replace the historic market square with a modern glass and steel complex. This assessment considers both the architectural impact and the socio-economic implications for the local community.
Impact on Local Identity One of the primary concerns raised by residents is the potential loss of cultural heritage. The traditional architecture of the square serves as a symbol of our city's history. It could be argued that replacing this with a contemporary design might lead to a sense of detachment among the older generation. However, proponents suggest that a modern design could symbolise progress and attract a younger demographic.
Economic and Functional Considerations From an economic perspective, the new complex offers significant advantages, such as increased retail space and multi-purpose facilities. This could lead to job creation and increased footfall in the city centre. Nevertheless, it must be noted that such a development requires substantial initial investment, which may place a strain on the municipal budget.
Conclusion and Recommendation In conclusion, while the preservation of heritage is vital, the need for urban modernisation is also evident. Taking all these factors into account, it is recommended that the council proceeds with the project, but only if the design incorporates elements of the original architecture to maintain a sense of continuity. This balanced approach would mitigate the loss of identity while allowing for much-needed urban growth.
