Unit 46: Natural Disasters & Geological Processes

Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2)

Question: You have been asked by a local environmental NGO to write a report regarding the impact of recent geological instability (such as minor earthquakes or landslides) in your region.

Write a report for the NGO director. In your report, you should: * Assess the impact of recent geological events on the local community. * Evaluate the effectiveness of current disaster prevention measures. * Suggest improvements to enhance public safety and resilience.

Write your report in 220-260 words in an appropriate style.

Tips (en español)

  • Structure: Para un report, utiliza subtítulos claros para cada sección. Esto ayuda al lector a encontrar la información rápidamente y demuestra control de la estructura formal.
  • Register: Mantén un tono formal y objetivo. Evita contracciones (use do not instead of don't) y evita el lenguaje coloquial. Usa la voz pasiva para sonar más profesional.
  • Linking: Utiliza conectores de transición avanzados para guiar al lector (e.g., Furthermore, Nevertheless, In light of the above). No te limites a and o but.
  • Hedging (Cautious Language): En temas científicos o de impacto, no uses afirmaciones absolutas. Usa hedging (e.g., it appears that, it is highly likely that) para mostrar un nivel de pensamiento crítico C1.
  • Evaluación de ideas: No te limites a listar hechos. Un reporte de nivel C1 debe analizar la relación entre causa y efecto (e.g., cómo un fenómeno geológico afecta la economía o la infraestructura).
  • Time management: Dedica unos 40-45 minutos a esta tarea. Reserva 5 minutos al final para revisar errores de concordancia (subject-verb agreement) y ortografía.

Report on Regional Geological Instability and Safety Measures

Introduction The purpose of this report is to assess the impact of recent seismic activity in the valley area and to evaluate the effectiveness of our current disaster preparedness protocols.

Impact on the Local Community Recent minor earthquakes and subsequent soil instability have caused significant disruption to local infrastructure. While no fatalities occurred, several minor landslides resulted in the closure of key transport routes, causing economic delays. Furthermore, there is a growing sense of anxiety among residents, particularly regarding the structural integrity of older buildings. It appears that the psychological impact on the community is as significant as the physical damage.

Evaluation of Current Measures At present, disaster prevention relies heavily on early warning systems and annual evacuation drills. While these measures are helpful, they are somewhat reactive rather than proactive. The current infrastructure is not sufficiently reinforced to withstand larger geological shifts, and the communication channels between emergency services and the public occasionally prove to be inefficient during peak crisis moments.

Recommendations In light of the aforementioned issues, it is recommended that the following steps be taken: 1. Infrastructure Reinforcement: A comprehensive audit of building stability should be conducted to identify high-risk zones. 2. Enhanced Communication: The implementation of a mobile-based alert system would ensure more immediate dissemination of warnings.

Conclusion To conclude, while the current measures provide a basic level of safety, they are insufficient for long-term resilience. Strengthening infrastructure and modernising communication are essential to mitigate future risks.

Marking checklist

  • Content: Have you addressed all three bullet points from the task? Is the information relevant to the NGO director?
  • Communicative Achievement: Is the tone formal and objective? Does the report follow the conventions of the genre (e.g., using headings and a professional tone)?
  • Organisation: Is the report logically structured with clear paragraphs and headings? Are cohesive devices (linking words) used effectively to connect ideas?
  • Language: Have you used a wide range of advanced vocabulary and complex grammatical structures (e.g., passive voice, conditionals, inversion)? Are there any errors in spelling or grammar?
