Lesson objectives

  • Recognise and control Ellipsis and substitution (so, do so, not, none, one).
  • Notice common errors Spanish-speaking learners make at advanced level.
  • Apply the structure in exam-style sentences related to natural disasters & geological processes.

I need a new compass, I'll buy one), mientras que en español simplemente omitimos el sustantivo.

En el contexto de desastres naturales, estas estructuras son útiles para describir procesos complejos. Por ejemplo, al comparar diferentes tipos de terremotos o movimientos tectónicos, podemos decir: "Some plates move faster than others, and they do so without warning" (sustitución de move faster than others). Dominar esto te permitirá escribir ensayos y reportes sobre temas científicos con la elegancia que requiere el nivel C1.

Form — estructura

Structure Function Example usage
Ellipsis Omitting words that are understood from context. "The eruption was massive, but the aftermath was even worse [than the eruption was]."
Substitution: so Replacing a clause (often with verbs of thinking/saying). "Is the volcano active? I believe so."
Substitution: do so Replacing a verb phrase to avoid repetition. "If the tectonic plates shift, they may do so violently."
Substitution: one / ones Replacing a countable noun. "I don't have a seismograph, but I can lend you one."
Substitution: none Replacing "not any" or "not one" of a group. "Many mitigation plans were proposed, but none were effective."

  2. ✗ I don't have a map of the fault lines, but I can lend you a map. ✓ I don't have a map of the fault lines, but I can lend you one. (Use 'one' to substitute a countable noun to avoid repetition).

  3. ✗ We thought the storm would pass, but we didn't thought so. ✓ We thought the storm would pass, but we didn't think so. (After auxiliary verbs like 'did/do', we use the base form of the verb).
