Lesson objectives

  • Recognise and control Discourse markers (admittedly, in contrast, to put it differently, hence).
  • Notice common errors Spanish-speaking learners make at advanced level.
  • Apply the structure in exam-style sentences related to ageing populations & retirement.

Form — estructura

Marker Function Position
Admittedly, Concession (admitting a truth) Usually at the start of a sentence.
In contrast, Comparison/Contrast At the start of a sentence or after a semicolon.
To put it differently, Reformulation At the start of a sentence to clarify.
Hence, Result/Consequence Often used to link a cause to an effect.

Examples

  1. Admittedly, the pension system faces significant challenges due to longer life expectancy.
  2. Older generations often value job security; in contrast, younger workers tend to prioritise flexibility.
  3. The government has failed to implement radical reforms; hence, the budget deficit continues to grow.
  4. We are seeing a shift towards longer working lives. To put it differently, the concept of retirement is changing.
  5. Admittedly, increasing the retirement age is a controversial topic.
  6. Many countries have ageing populations; in contrast, some developing nations have much younger demographics.
  7. There is a lack of investment in elderly care; hence, many families are struggling to cope.
  8. The workforce is becoming increasingly fragmented. To put it differently, it is harder to maintain social cohesion in the workplace.

Contrast

  1. Admittedly the economy is growing, but unemployment is high. / ✓ Admittedly, the economy is growing, but unemployment is high.
  2. ✗ The population is ageing, in contrast the workforce is shrinking. / ✓ The population is ageing; in contrast, the workforce is shrinking.
  3. ✗ He retired early, hence he is happy. / ✓ He retired early; hence, he is happy.
  4. ✗ He is very old. To put it differently, he is a centenarian. / ✓ He is very old. To put it differently, he is a centenarian.
