Lesson objectives

  • Recognise and control Mixed conditionals (2nd/3rd) and inverted conditionals (had/were/should).
  • Notice common errors Spanish-speaking learners make at advanced level.
  • Apply the structure in exam-style sentences related to social class, privilege & mobility.

Form — estructura

Inverted (3rd) Had + Subject + Past Participle Would have + Past Participle Formal version of "If I had..."
Inverted (1st) Should + Subject + Infinitive Would/Will + Infinitive Formal version of "If you should..."

Examples

  1. Had I been born into a wealthy family, I would be studying at Oxford now.

  3. Were it not for his social connections, he would never have secured the promotion.

  8. Were I in his position, I would have used my privilege to help others.

Contrast

  1. ✗ If I would have known about the privilege, I would have acted differently. ✓ Had I known about the privilege, I would have acted differently. (Error: No se usa "would" en la cláusula con "if/had". La inversión requiere el auxiliar al principio).

  2. ✗ If I were born rich, I would have been a CEO. ✓ If I had been born rich, I would be a CEO.

  3. ✗ If he had more money, he would have bought the house yesterday. ✓ If he had had more money, he would have bought the house yesterday. (Error: Para el tercer condicional (pasado), necesitamos el Past Perfect "had had").

  4. ✗ Should you to arrive late, please call us. ✓ Should you arrive late, please call us. (Error: En la inversión con "should", el verbo debe ir en infinitivo sin "to").
