Unit 34: Gender, Identity & Social Norms
Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2)
Instructions: You should spend about 45 minutes on this task.
Question: In many modern societies, traditional gender roles are being challenged, leading to significant shifts in how individuals perceive identity and social responsibilities. Some argue that these changes promote equality, while others believe they disrupt social cohesion.
Write an essay discussing both views and giving your own opinion.
You are required to write your answer in the range of 220-260 words.
Evita contracciones (use do not instead of don't) y lenguaje coloquial. El objetivo es sonar objetivo y profesional.
- Linking: No te limites a usar and o but.
Usa un lenguaje cauteloso (It is often argued that..., This could lead to...) para que tus argumentos parezcan más sofisticados y menos sesgados.

It is often asserted that the traditional definitions of gender roles are undergoing a profound transformation. While some individuals argue that these shifts foster greater equality, others contend that they undermine the stability of social structures. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own conclusion.
On the one hand, proponents of changing social norms argue that breaking away from traditional gender identities allows for greater individual freedom. By dismantling rigid expectations, society can move towards a more inclusive environment where personal identity is not limited by biological sex. This shift is seen as a fundamental step towards achieving true gender equality, allowing both men and women to pursue roles based on talent rather than tradition.
On the other hand, some critics maintain that these changes may lead to social fragmentation. They argue that traditional roles provided a clear framework for family life and social cohesion. From this perspective, the ambiguity regarding identity and responsibility could result in confusion or a lack of stability within the domestic sphere. Nevertheless, it is important to consider whether these traditional models were truly beneficial or merely restrictive.
In conclusion, while the disruption of long-standing norms can cause temporary social tension, I believe that the benefits of individual autonomy outweigh the risks. The move towards more fluid identities allows for a more authentic expression of self, which ultimately strengthens society by fostering diversity. Therefore, embracing these changes is essential for progress in the modern era.
