Unit 32: Smart Cities & Urban Technology
Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2)
Question: You work for a local city council. The council is considering implementing a new "Smart City" initiative, which includes widespread sensor technology to monitor traffic, waste management, and energy usage. However, some residents are concerned about privacy and the cost of the technology.
Write a REPORT for the City Council, evaluating the potential benefits and drawbacks of the smart city initiative, and recommending whether or not the project should proceed.
Evita contracciones (use it is instead of it's) y evita el uso excesivo de la primera persona (I think), optando por formas impersonales (It is suggested that...).
Usa el "hedging" (lenguaje cauteloso) para sonar más académico (e.g., It could be argued that..., This might lead to...).

Report on the Proposed Smart City Initiative
Introduction The purpose of this report is to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed smart city initiative. This project aims to integrate advanced sensor technology into our urban infrastructure to optimise resource management.
Potential Benefits A significant advantage of this initiative is the potential for increased efficiency in public services. For instance, smart traffic management systems could substantially reduce congestion and carbon emissions. Furthermore, automated waste management would allow for more timely collections, leading to cleaner streets. Such technological advancements would likely enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
Drawbacks and Concerns Conversely, the implementation of widespread sensor technology raises valid concerns regarding data privacy. There is a risk that constant monitoring could be perceived as an infringement on civil liberties. Additionally, the initial capital investment required is considerable. While long-term savings are expected, the immediate financial burden on the council must be carefully considered.
Conclusion and Recommendation Taking these points into account, it is evident that while the technological benefits are compelling, the issues of privacy and cost cannot be overlooked. It is suggested that the council should not proceed with a full-scale rollout immediately. Instead, a pilot programme in a limited district is recommended. This would allow for the assessment of technological efficacy and the development of robust privacy protocols before a city-wide implementation.
Marking checklist
