Lesson objectives

  • Recognise and control Pseudo-cleft constructions (What matters is…; The thing is…).
  • Notice common errors Spanish-speaking learners make at advanced level.
  • Apply the structure in exam-style sentences related to smart cities & urban technology.

Explicación (en español)

Las pseudo-cleft sentences (oraciones de hendidura pseudo) son estructuras gramaticales avanzadas que se utilizan para enfatizar una parte específica de la frase. En lugar de dar una información directa, "limpiamos" el camino para dirigir la atención del oyente hacia el elemento más importante. En lugar de decir "I need more data", decimos "What I need is more data". Esta estructura es extremadamente útil en el examen C1 Advanced para demostrar control sobre la cohesión y el énfasis.

Estas frases suelen empezar con una cláusula relativa (What..., The thing that..., The reason why...) seguida del verbo to be y el elemento enfático. El uso de What es el más común para enfatizar acciones o cosas, mientras que The thing is... se utiliza a menudo para introducir un punto crucial, un problema o una conclusión en un debate. Es una herramienta de "foco" que permite al hablante organizar la información de manera jerárquica.

Un error muy común entre los hispanohablantes es intentar traducir literalmente estructuras como "Lo que pasa es que..." como "That which happens is...". En inglés natural, debemos usar "What happens is...".

Let's try a subject-verb error): ✗ What we need are more sensors. / ✓ What we need is more sensors. (Note: In pseudo-clefts, 'is' is often used even with plural complements to focus on the concept, though 'are' is acceptable in some contexts. However, 'is' is more common for the 'What' structure.)
  2. ✗ The thing is that we must act now. / ✓ The thing is, we must act now. (While 'that' is possible, 'The thing is...' is usually followed by a clause directly for natural emphasis.)
  3. ✗ It is the traffic that causes pollution. / ✓ What causes pollution is the traffic. (The first is a standard cleft; the second is a pseudo-cleft used for stronger emphasis on the cause.)
  4. ✗ The reason is because of the budget. / ✓ The reason is the budget. (Avoid 'the reason is because'; use 'the reason is [noun]' or 'the reason is that [clause]'.)
