Unit 30: Digital Health & Telemedicine

Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2)

Question: Your English language lecturer has asked you to write a report regarding the implementation of telemedicine services in local community health centres.

The report should: * Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of remote consultations. * Assess the impact on patient accessibility. * Recommend whether these services should be expanded or limited.

Write your report. (220-260 words)

En su lugar, usa formas impersonales (It is argued that...).
Usa hedging para sonar más académico: It could be argued that..., This might lead to..., o There is a tendency to....

Report on the Implementation of Telemedicine Services

Introduction The purpose of this report is to evaluate the integration of telemedicine within local health centres and to assess its viability for future expansion. It examines both the practical benefits and the potential challenges of remote medical consultations.

Evaluation of Remote Consultations The primary advantage of telemedicine is the increased efficiency in managing routine appointments. By utilising video conferencing, clinicians can provide immediate advice, thereby reducing the physical burden on medical facilities. Furthermore, it offers unparalleled convenience for patients with limited mobility.

However, certain drawbacks cannot be overlooked. The reliance on digital infrastructure may lead to a "digital divide," where elderly or low-income patients struggle to access care. Additionally, there are concerns regarding the accuracy of remote diagnoses compared to in-person examinations. Nevertheless, these issues could potentially be mitigated through improved user interfaces and hybrid models of care.

Impact on Accessibility Telemedicine has significantly enhanced accessibility for those living in remote areas. It eliminates travel time and costs, ensuring that specialist advice is available regardless of geographical constraints. While it cannot entirely replace physical presence, it serves as a vital tool for preliminary assessments and follow-up care.

Recommendations In light of the findings, it is recommended that telemedicine services be expanded, provided they are implemented alongside digital literacy programmes for vulnerable groups. A hybrid approach, combining remote and in-person visits, would ensure optimal patient care.

Marking checklist

  • Content: Has the candidate addressed all three bullet points from the task? Is the information relevant to the topic of digital health?
  • Communicative Achievement: Is the tone appropriately formal for a report? Does the candidate use the correct format (headings, clear sections) to hold the reader's attention?
  • Organisation: Are the ideas logically sequenced? Are cohesive devices (linkers) used effectively to connect paragraphs and complex ideas?
  • Language: Does the candidate use a wide range of advanced vocabulary and complex grammatical structures (e.g., passives, conditionals, hedging)? Are there errors that impede communication?
