Unit 24: Cybersecurity, Privacy & Digital Rights

Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2)

Question: Your lecturer has asked you to write a report regarding the impact of digital surveillance and data privacy on modern society. You should address the following points: * The potential risks of increasing data collection by corporations. * The balance between national security and individual privacy. * Recommendations for how individuals can better protect their digital rights.

Write your report.

Evita contracciones (use do not instead of don't) y evita el uso excesivo de la primera persona (I think), prefiriendo estructuras impersonales.
  • Linking: Utiliza conectores de transición avanzados para guiar al lector (e.g., Furthermore, Conversely, In light of the above).
  • Hedging: En el nivel C1, no debes ser demasiado categórico. Usa el "hedging" (lenguaje cauteloso) para suavizar afirmaciones (e.g., It could be argued that... o This may lead to...).

Report on Digital Privacy and Cybersecurity Trends

Introduction The aim of this report is to examine the implications of increasing digital surveillance and data collection on individual privacy, while offering recommendations for safeguarding digital rights.

Corporate Data Collection It is widely asserted that the mass collection of personal data by multinational corporations poses significant risks. While data harvesting allows for personalised user experiences, it simultaneously exposes individuals to identity theft and psychological profiling. There is a growing concern that personal information is being commodified without sufficient transparency, potentially undermining the fundamental right to privacy.

Security vs. Privacy A contentious issue is the balance between national security and individual liberty. Governments often argue that increased surveillance is necessary to prevent cybercrime and terrorism. However, it could be argued that such measures often infringe upon civil liberties. While security is paramount, it should not come at the cost of total transparency, as this may lead to an era of unprecedented state control.

Recommendations To mitigate these risks, it is recommended that individuals adopt more robust cybersecurity habits, such as using multi-factor authentication and encrypted communication tools. Furthermore, legislative bodies should implement stricter data protection laws to hold corporations accountable.

Conclusion In conclusion, while the digital age offers immense benefits, the risks to privacy are substantial. A balance must be struck between technological advancement and the protection of individual rights through both personal diligence and rigorous legal frameworks.

Marking checklist

  • Content: Did you address all three bullet points from the task? Does the report provide relevant information to the reader?
  • Communicative Achievement: Is the tone appropriately formal for a report? Does it use the correct format (subheadings) to communicate complex ideas effectively?
  • Organisation: Is the text logically organised? Are cohesive devices (linking words) used to create a smooth flow between paragraphs?
  • Language: Did you use a wide range of advanced vocabulary and complex grammatical structures? Are there errors in spelling or punctuation that impede communication?
