Unit 20: Career Development & Professional Networking

Writing Task: The Proposal

Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2)

Question: You are a mid-level manager at a large international company. You have noticed that many employees feel their career progression is stagnant and that professional networking within the company is weak. You have been asked by the Board of Directors to write a proposal suggesting ways to improve professional development and networking opportunities within the organisation.

Write your proposal. You must explain: * How to facilitate better career development opportunities. * How to encourage more effective professional networking among staff. * The expected benefits of these changes for the company.

Evita contracciones (use it is instead of it's) y lenguaje coloquial.
Usa lenguaje cauteloso como it is anticipated that... o this could lead to... para sonar profesional y no arrogante.

Proposal for Enhancing Career Development and Internal Networking

Introduction The purpose of this proposal is to outline strategies to improve employee career progression and foster a more collaborative professional environment within the company.

Career Development Opportunities To address the stagnation in career growth, it is suggested that the company implements a structured mentorship programme. By pairing junior staff with senior executives, knowledge transfer would be maximised. Furthermore, I would recommend allocating a specific annual budget for professional certifications. This would ensure that employees remain at the forefront of industry trends, directly benefiting our company's expertise.

Fostering Professional Networking Regarding internal networking, the company should introduce monthly "cross-departmental workshops." These sessions would allow employees from different sectors to share insights and collaborate on interdisciplinary projects. Additionally, creating a digital internal networking platform could facilitate communication between remote and office-based staff, breaking down existing silos.

Expected Benefits While these initiatives require an initial investment of time and capital, the long-term advantages are significant. It is anticipated that such measures will lead to increased employee retention and higher levels of engagement. Moreover, a more skilled and well-connected workforce will enhance our overall operational efficiency and innovation capacity.

Conclusion In conclusion, by investing in mentorship and structured networking, the company can revitalise its workforce. It is highly recommended that the Board approves these proposals to ensure our long-term competitive advantage.

Marking checklist

  • Content: Has the writer addressed all three bullet points from the prompt? Is the information relevant to the target reader (the Board)?
  • Communicative Achievement: Is the tone appropriately formal for a proposal? Does the writer use "hedging" to sound professional rather than demanding?
  • Organisation: Are clear headings used? Does the text flow logically from the problem to the solution and then to the benefits?
  • Language: Is there a range of advanced vocabulary and complex grammatical structures? Are there errors that impede communication?
