Lesson objectives

  • Recognise and control Hedging language (it would appear that; there is a tendency for).
  • Notice common errors Spanish-speaking learners make at advanced level.
  • Apply the structure in exam-style sentences related to sleep science, circadian rhythm & productivity.

Por ello, usamos expresiones como it would appear that o there is a tendency for para suavizar afirmaciones. Esto protege la credibilidad del autor: si los datos cambian, no has afirmado algo falso, sino que has propuesto una tendencia. En español, esto equivale a usar el subjuntivo o expresiones como "parece ser que" o "suele ocurrir que".

Un error típico de los hispanohablantes es ser demasiado directos (directness). En español solemos decir "La falta de sueño causa baja productividad", lo cual es una generalización arriesgada. En inglés académico, esto suena poco profesional. Un estudiante de nivel C1 debería decir: "It would appear that sleep deprivation leads to reduced productivity". El error común es confundir la cautela con la falta de claridad; el hedging no debe hacer que la frase sea ambigua, sino que debe ser precisa sobre el grado de certeza.

Form — estructura

Type of Hedging Structure Example
Verbal (Modal) Subject + Modal (would/may/might) + Verb It might be argued that...
Introductory Phrases It + would/seems + appear/seem + that + clause It would appear that sleep cycles vary.
Noun Phrases There + is/was + a tendency/likelihood + for + noun/to-infinitive There is a tendency for productivity to drop.
Adverbial Hedging Subject + Adverb (arguably/potentially) + Verb This is arguably the most important factor.
