Explicación (en español)

Las participle clauses (cláusulas de participio) son una herramienta esencial para alcanzar el nivel C1, ya que permiten condensar información y dar un tono más sofisticado, literario o académico a tus escritos. En lugar de usar dos frases separadas con conjunciones como because, when o after, utilizamos un participio para unir ideas que comparten el mismo sujeto. Esto ayuda a evitar la repetición de pronombres y hace que el flujo de la lectura sea más natural.

Existen tres tipos principales que debemos dominar. Primero, las present participle clauses (terminadas en -ing) se usan para acciones simultáneas o para expresar una causa. Por ejemplo, si dos acciones ocurren al mismo tiempo, usamos -ing. Segundo, las past participle clauses (terminadas en -ed o participios irregulares) tienen un valor pasivo. Se utilizan para describir estados o acciones que han recibido la acción. Finalmente, las perfect participle clauses (having + past participle) se usan para enfatizar que una acción terminó completamente antes de que empezara la siguiente.

Un error muy común entre los hispanohablantes es el "dangling participle" (participio colgante). Esto ocurre cuando el sujeto de la cláusula de participio no coincide con el sujeto de la frase principal. Por ejemplo, si dices "Walking down the street, the camera fell", estás diciendo que la cámara estaba caminando por la calle. Siempre debemos asegurarnos de que el sujeto de la parte con -ing sea el mismo que el sujeto de la cláusula principal.

En español, solemos usar mucho el gerundio para expresar simultaneidad, pero tendemos a usar más oraciones subordinadas completas para la causa o la secuencia temporal. En inglés avanzado, la capacidad de sustituir "Because he had finished the documentary..." por "Having finished the documentary..." es lo que marca la diferencia entre un nivel B2 y un C1.
