Lesson objectives

  • Recognise and control Inversion after negative adverbials (rarely, seldom, no sooner, not until).
  • Notice common errors Spanish-speaking learners make at advanced level.
  • Apply the structure in exam-style sentences related to theatre, performance & live arts.

Por ejemplo: "Not until the curtain rose did the audience stop talking".

No sooner No sooner + had + Subject + Past Participle + than... No sooner had the play started than...
Hardly / Scarcely Hardly + had + Subject + Past Participle + when... Hardly had she stepped on stage when...
Not until Not until + [Time/Event] + Auxiliary + Subject + Verb Not until then did they realize...

Examples

  1. Rarely have I witnessed such a breathtakingly powerful performance. (Rara vez he presenciado una actuación tan asombrosamente poderosa.)
  2. Seldom does a director manage to capture such raw emotion on stage.
  3. No sooner had the lights dimmed than the audience fell silent.
  4. Hardly had the lead actor finished his monologue when the applause erupted.
  5. Not until the final act did the true meaning of the play become clear.
  6. Never before had the theatre seen such a massive turnout.
  7. Only after the standing ovation did the director leave the stage.
  8. Little did they know that the play would become a global sensation.

Contrast

  1. ✗ Rarely I go to the opera. / ✓ Rarely do I go to the opera.
  2. ✗ No sooner had the show started when the power went out. / ✓ No sooner had the show started than the power went out. (Error: No sooner siempre requiere than).
  3. ✗ Not until the end the play ended did we cry. / ✓ Not until the play ended did we cry.
  4. ✗ Hardly I had arrived at the theatre when it started raining. / ✓ Hardly had I arrived at the theatre when it started raining. (Error: El auxiliar debe preceder al sujeto).
