Detailed explanation, examples and controlled practice for the unit grammar point.
Lesson objectives
- Recognise and control Appositive noun phrases and their punctuation.
- Notice common errors Spanish-speaking learners make at advanced level.
- Apply the structure in exam-style sentences related to music, subcultures & cultural identity.
The festival, which is a celebration of underground techno, lasted three days".
Finalmente, ten cuidado con la ambigüedad. Si colocas una aposición mal posicionada, podrías atribuir una característica al sujeto equivocado. Asegúrate siempre de que la aposición esté inmediatamente después del sustantivo al que se refiere para mantener la claridad, especialmente en temas complejos como la identidad cultural o movimientos sociales.
Form — estructura
| Type of Appositive | Function | Punctuation | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-restrictive | Adds extra, non-essential information. | Always uses commas. | London, a melting pot of cultures, is unique. |
| Restrictive | Essential to identify the noun. | No commas used. | The subculture known as punk challenged norms. |
| Summary Appositive | Summarises a preceding clause or list. | Usually follows a comma. | Jazz, a genre born in New Orleans, is complex. |
