Writing Task: The Essay

Task (Cambridge C1 Advanced, Part 2 style)

Instructions: You have read a discussion in an international science magazine about the potential impact of quantum computing on society. Write an essay discussing two of the following points:

  1. Economic implications (job market and productivity)
  2. Security risks (privacy and data encryption)
  3. Scientific breakthroughs (medical and environmental solutions)

Notes: Write about both the points in your notes. Include your own ideas.

Word count: 220–260 words.


Tips (en español)

  • Structure: Organiza tu ensayo en cuatro párrafos claros: Introducción (contexto y tesis), Cuerpo 1 (punto 1), Cuerpo 2 (punto 2) y Conclusión (resumen y opinión final). Nunca uses subtítulos.
  • Register: Mantén un tono formal y académico. Evita contracciones (don't, won't) y lenguaje coloquial. Usa la tercera persona o estructuras impersonales (It is often argued that...).
  • Linking: Utiliza conectores avanzados para guiar al lector. No te limites a and o but; usa furthermore, conversely, nevertheless o consequently para mostrar sofisticación.
  • Hedging (Cautela): En temas científicos o especulativos, no uses afirmaciones absolutas. Usa "hedging" (it is highly probable that, might lead to, could potentially) para sonar más académico y preciso.
  • Evaluación de ideas: No te limites a listar hechos. Debes analizar el impacto. Si hablas de riesgos, explica por qué son un problema; si hablas de beneficios, evalúa su importancia.
  • Time management: Dedica 5 minutos a planificar (brainstorming), 35 minutos a escribir y 5-10 minutos finales a revisar errores gramaticales y de ortografía.

The Dual-Edged Sword of Quantum Computing

The rapid advancement of quantum physics is poised to usher in a technological revolution. While the transition to quantum computing promises unprecedented computational power, it simultaneously presents profound challenges. This essay will examine the economic implications and the potential security risks associated with this emerging field.

Regarding the economic landscape, the integration of quantum technology could lead to a radical transformation of the global job market. On one hand, it is highly probable that automation driven by quantum algorithms will significantly boost productivity across sectors such as logistics and finance. On the other hand, this shift might render certain traditional roles obsolete, necessitating a global retraining of the workforce. Therefore, while economic growth is likely, the transition period could be volatile.

Simultaneously, the security implications cannot be overlooked. Current encryption methods, which safeguard global communications, could be rendered useless by quantum processing power. This poses a significant threat to data privacy and national security. Although researchers are currently developing "quantum-resistant" cryptography, the race between hackers and security experts remains a critical concern.

In conclusion, while quantum computing offers the potential for immense economic growth and scientific progress, it also introduces significant risks to job stability and digital security. It is my view that while we cannot halt technological progress, we must proactively develop regulatory frameworks and security protocols to mitigate these emerging threats.
