Detailed explanation, examples and controlled practice for the unit grammar point.
Lesson objectives
- Recognise and control Quantifiers at C1 (a great deal of; the majority of; hardly any; scarcely).
- Notice common errors Spanish-speaking learners make at advanced level.
- Apply the structure in exam-style sentences related to migration, asylum & borders.
Explicación (en español)
En el nivel C1 Advanced, ya no basta con usar much, many, a lot of o some.

Contrast

-
✗ The majority of the population is/are fleeing the war. / ✓ The majority of the population is fleeing the war. (Note: When 'majority' refers to a singular collective noun, use a singular verb. However, if it refers to individuals, use plural. In C1, focus on the noun following 'of').
-
✗ There is hardly no food at the camp. / ✓ There is hardly any food at the camp. (Error: 'Hardly' already has a negative meaning. Using 'no' creates a double negative).
-
✗ He scarcely has any money. / ✓ He has scarcely any money. (Note: While both can be used, 'scarcely' is more formal and often placed before the quantity or the verb).
