Lesson objectives

  • Recognise and control Cohesive devices: reference chains, substitution, ellipsis.
  • Notice common errors Spanish-speaking learners make at advanced level.
  • Apply the structure in exam-style sentences related to blockchain, crypto & decentralised finance.

Las reference chains utilizan pronombres (it, they, this, these) o expresiones de referencia (the former, the latter, such) para conectar ideas. Por ejemplo, en lugar de repetir "The Ethereum network" tres veces, usamos "this network" o "it".

Form — estructura

Technique Function Example
Reference (Anaphora/Cataphora) Uses pronouns or determiners to point to something mentioned before or after. The ledger is immutable; it cannot be altered.
Substitution Replaces a word/clause with a placeholder to avoid repetition. Do you need more Bitcoin? I need some too. / They want to mint NFTs, and they do so regularly.
Ellipsis Omitting words that are understood from the context. She bought the hardware wallet, and he [bought] the software.
The former / The latter Refers to the first or second of two previously mentioned items. Between Bitcoin and Ethereum, the latter is more programmable.
