SIPOC and value-stream mapping

You do not need elaborate notation to improve a small-business process. SIPOC and a simple value-stream view give you enough structure to ask useful questions and find where waiting, rework or risky judgement occurs.

SIPOC in plain language

  • Suppliers: who or what provides the input?
  • Inputs: what record, request, file or signal starts the work?
  • Process: what repeatable steps turn that input into an outcome?
  • Outputs: what is produced, recorded or promised?
  • Customers: who receives the outcome or depends on it next?

Northstar SIPOC starter

Terminal
Suppliers: prospect, existing customer, website, phone system
Inputs: request text, product list, customer identity
Process: capture -> qualify -> check stock -> draft quote -> review -> send -> follow up
Outputs: quote, decline, clarification request, CRM record
Customers: buyer, sales manager, fulfilment team

Add elapsed time and failure points

A value-stream map adds time: how long work waits, how long a person actually works, and where it returns for correction. Write measured time separately from guesses. The difference between the two often becomes your first assessment deliverable.

Practical mission

Create Northstar's SIPOC. Then add three columns: evidence source, current elapsed time, and failure if the step is wrong. Do not estimate revenue impact yet; that is the next module.

Evidence to save

Save the map with unknowns visible. It becomes the shared reference for the process owner, the technical reviewer and the client sponsor.

How all courses connect

This is not a checklist. Start with the foundation, choose an outcome, and go deeper only when your project needs more control.

  1. 1Understand
  2. 2Apply or build
  3. 3Operate with confidence
01

Choose an application

Turn the foundation into a visible outcome: a website, a business improvement, media, or an interactive experience.

Continue into the technical branch when you need to maintain code, data, or infrastructure.

02

Build with code

Prepare your environment, work with coding agents, and run models while keeping control of your projects.

This branch prepares you to design and operate reliable AI systems.

03

Take systems to production

Combine retrieval, agents, evaluation, security, deployment, and model adaptation when the problem requires it.

You do not need every course: choose the component your system needs and return as it grows.
